Byre Cottage is a charming cottage in the picturesque village of Daddry Shield that boasts beautiful countryside views from every window. Built in the 1850s, it was converted from a byre in the 1970s. Situated in Weardale in the North_Pennines, near the Cumbrian border, it is in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.
Byre Cottage has been newly renovated and great care has been taken to retain and enhance its original features. Among these are the wood-beam ceiling, stone window seat, open fireplace and the bathroom objects from the early 20th century.
A stay at the cottage is perfect whether you want to see the romantic English countryside, find the perfect walk, or bike and cycle down Weardale’s famous winding roads. The area is filled with valleys, moors, rivers, and breath-taking hilltop views just waiting to be explored. The yellow Mineral Valleys Walk signs will lead you on the many walking tracks around the local villages.
Its location is also ideal for couples, families and friends who want a convenient base to explore nearby places such as the Lake District, Northumberland National Park, the Yorkshire Dales and a whole host of historic towns and villages.
The area represents a unique part of English heritage. Book your stay with us to explore one of England’s best kept secrets.

Although we haven't travelled too far, we have spent a lovely, peaceful and relaxing half-term break in this cosy, well-equipped cottage. Lots to see and do to keep everyone happy. We’ve walked our socks off visiting the local area – Stanhope, Alston, St, John’s Chapel, Ireshopeburn, High Force, as well as Daddry Shield!! (The Belton Family from Stockton-on-Tees)
Thank you for (another) wonderful New Year Week at Byre Cottage (a third time!). It really feels like a home from home. …. ( Mark and Paul from Bristol)
